Pro Compression Socks review & giveaway (ENDED)

When I first started running, I had the absolute worst shin splints ever.  I would end my run in tears because my legs were practically screaming at me.  I began to wear compression sleeves, and that really helped with my pain.

The more I run, the more I understand how important recovery is.  I saw a lot of buzz about Pro Compression on Twitter and heard nothing but rave reviews about them.  I owned compression sleeves, but not socks, so I thought I would try them out.

The first pair I bought was right before we left for our Hawaiian vacation.  I wanted them to wear on the plane (they also help minimize swelling on long flights!).  Pro Compression’s customer service department was amazing and made sure that I received the socks before we left.  A great product AND great customer service?  Count me in!

A few weeks later I saw they had a pair of their sleeves on sale, so I snatched a pair of those up and wore them the day after my double race day.

Pro Compression socks and sleeves are a great addition to any runner’s closet, whether you wear them during your runs or slip them on afterward.  They also come in a lot of fun colors, and they’re always coming out with new ones!  Did you see the new yellow Sock of the Month?

Solidarity Run for Boston

The day after the Boston Marathon bombings, my local running store, Big Peach Running Company, held a short run at 7 a.m.  I was bummed that I couldn’t make it as I had to be at work by 7:30, but was excited to find out they decided to host another one on Monday, April 22nd.

A fellow blogger, Pavement Runner, decided that she needed to do more to show her support for Boston, so she organized the #BostonStrong global running event.  She encouraged everyone across the nation, and even the world, to show their support for Boston with a run.  It could be a couple of friends or a large group.  This movement even received national recognition.

I linked with a new running friend, Brandi, at the BPRC location in Alpharetta, so that we could run together.  When we arrived, we noticed a LOT of people wearing their Boston gear.  It was pretty cool (and a little intimidating!) to be running with some amazing athletes that had the opportunity to run the Boston Marathon.

We gathered together for a group picture and were told that we were doing a 1 mile run totally in silence to reflect and remember those affected in Boston just a week before.  It was kind of neat to run in silence since you usually have the noise of the crowd or music in your headphones.

After the mile of silence was done, they continued with a group run, which Brandi and I participated in.  She was tapering for the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in DC that weekend, so we took it nice and slow and had a good chat along the way.

I wasn’t able to stay for the after party, but there was Boston lager and some other Boston themed treats to nibble on and chat with other runners.  They also collected money for The One Fund.  It was announced on their Facebook page that between all the BPRC locations, over 800 runners came out to show their support for Boston!  There were other running stores across Atlanta that also held runs, including Phiddipides and West Stride.

Did you participate in the #BostonStrong run?  How are you paying tribute to the Boston Marathon and those affected by the tragedy?

I’m Officially a Dirty Girl!

On April 20th I had the opportunity to run the Dirty Girl Mud Run in Atlanta.  I recruited my friend, Jessica, and her sister to run with me, and it would be their first 5ks!  I couldn’t wait to experience this race with them.

As usual, I laid my clothes out the night before – we all wore blue and yellow ribbons in our hair for Boston, and piggies on our socks in memory of Jessica’s grandmother, who passed away from breast cancer.

We got up nice and early as our heat started at 9:30, and headed to Lake Lanier Islands and Resort, where the race would be taking place.  Getting there and parking was a breeze, and it was a bit of a walk to check-in, but luckily it was all down hill :)  It was a pretty cold morning – 38 degrees!!

Check in was super easy – you picked a tent and they looked up your registration on iPads and gave you a race bib.  How coincidental was it that they gave me my wedding anniversary?!?!

We grabbed our shirts and necklaces, located the bag check, browsed in the store where I bought a tumbler and some lip balm (I had left mine at home) then found a sunny spot to wait for my realtor and her friends to show up.  In the meantime we snapped a picture of the three of us -

Finally my friends got there, we got rid of our warm layer of clothing, checked our bags and, of course, got some more pictures!

We headed to the start line where the DJ was giving us a little run through of the course and some of the obstacles that we would encounter.  Soon enough, it was our turn to head out!

(I took a waterproof camera on this run and I’m so glad I did!  Just a recommendation to some of you that might want pictures but don’t have a waterproof digital camera)

The first obstacle we came to was the Barn Burner – an inflatable obstacle that you climbed up and bounced your way down!

24_24A
The next obstacle was called “Get Over Yourself!”  You climbed up and over a wall :)
23_23A
The next couple were the same – PMS (Pretty Muddy Stuff) and I can’t remember the name of the other one!  But one thing was certain – that water was COLD!!!
21_21A 22_22A
The next couple of obstacles were “The Runaway Bride” and “Down and Dirty”19_19A18_18A
Next we came up to “You Go Girl” and, one of my favorites, the “Funky Monkey”.
17_17A16_16A
(The easiest way to get over the Funky Monkey is to roll across the net…don’t crawl!)

We were a little over halfway done at this point.  The next obstacle was “Get a Grip”
14_14A
After we conquered the second cargo net of the day, we did the “Amaze Yourself” obstacle, which was like a huge spider web…I almost tripped myself a couple of times…oops…
13_13A
Next up was “H2OMG!” and the water was STILL cold!
11_11A
The most fun obstacle was next - “Dirty Dancing” – a HUGE inflatable slide with a mud bath you plunged into at the bottom!
10_10A 09_8A
The final obstacle of the day was the “Utopian Tubes” – it was dark, muddy, and a little gravel-y too!
08_7A
Finally, we came up on the finish line – Jessica and her sister had completed their first 5k!  I was so incredibly proud of them!
06_5A 05_4A
We had to stop by the Dirty Girl back drop and get a picture too!
03_2A
Once we finished Jamie found us.  We chatted for a few with her husband and made sure to grab our free beer…we earned it!
02_1A
We were finally done being muddy and made our way back up to get our bags and change.  I was happy they had a changing tent and rinsing station as the Warrior Dash I completed the weekend before didn’t.  It wasn’t quite what I expected but at least we had a little bit of privacy.
01_0A
Overall, I really enjoyed this race.  If you’re looking to do a mud run but are a bit intimated by some of the bigger ones like Warrior Dash, Spartan Race, or Tough Mudder, this is a fun one to ease you into it.  It’s untimed and completely just about having fun.  Check out their website to see if they’re coming to a city near you!

Have you run a Dirty Girl Mud Run in your area?  Would you do it again?

Foodie Friday – Irish Car Bomb Cupcakes

I apologize for missing last week!  I had some things I needed to get done before leaving for the beach to celebrate our wedding anniversary, but trust me…this recipe is worth the wait.

Last Monday I was approached by a co-worker who asked me if I could bake something for her March of Dimes bake sale she was holding at work.  She had a premature baby a couple of years ago who did not make it and now she raises money for the March of Dimes in her baby girl’s honor.  I agreed to help her out.

I knew off the bat that I wanted to do cupcakes, but I wanted them to be different.  I made these Irish Car Bomb Cupcakes for J’s birthday a few years back and they were a big hit, so I wanted to make them again.

I found this recipe from Annie’s Eats…she has TONS of awesome recipes so be sure to check her out!

Ingredients
For the Guinness chocolate cupcakes
1 cup stout (Guinness)
16 tbsp butter
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups sugar
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
3/4 tsp salt
2 large eggs
2/3 cup sour cream

For the Bailey’s ganache filling
8 oz bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped
2/3 cup heavy cream
2 tbsp butter, at room temperature
2 tsp Bailey’s Irish cream (or Jameson whiskey)

For the Bailey’s buttercream frosting
8 tbsp unsalted butter, at room temperature
3-4 cups confectioner’s sugar, sifted
4-8 tbsp Bailey’s Irish cream

Directions
To make the cupcakes, preheat the oven to 350 degrees (adjust the temperature as needed for your oven as they are all different).  Line two cupcake pans with paper liners.  Combine the stout and butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.  Add the cocoa powder and whisk until smooth.  Remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly.
 IMG_5075 IMG_5076
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking soda and salt (I like to sift the flour).  In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat together the eggs and sour cream to blend.  Add the stout mixture and beat just to combine.  Mix in the dry ingredients on low speed just until incorporated.
IMG_5077IMG_5078IMG_5080
Divide the batter evenly between the cupcake liners, filling them about 2/3 to 3/4 full.  Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 17 minutes.  Allow to cool in pan for 5-10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
IMG_5081IMG_5090
To make the ganache filling, place the chocolate into a heatproof bowl.  Heat the cream in a small saucepan until simmering, then pour it over the chocolate.  Let sit for one minute and then whisk until smooth.  If the chocolate is not completely melted, place the bowl over a double boiler or give it a very short burst in the microwave (15-20 seconds).  Add the butter and Bailey’s and stir until combined.

Set aside to let the ganache cool until it is thick enough to be piped.  (You can use the refrigerator to speed the cooling process, but be sure to stir every 10 minutes or so to ensure even cooling).  Meanwhile, cut out a portion from the center of the cupcake using the cone method (a small paring knife works best for this).  Once the ganache has reached the correct consistency, transfer it to a piping bag fitted with a wide tip and pipe it into the cupcakes.

NOTE: I chose not to do this part as I find the ganache to make the cupcake too rich, but if you like rich chocolate it’s right up your alley

To make the frosting, place the butter in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment.  Beat on medium high speed until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.  Gradually add the powdered sugar until it is all incorporated.  Mix in the Bailey’s until smooth.  Add more if necessary until the frosting has reached a good consistency for piping or spreading.  Frost the cupcake as desired.
IMG_5091IMG_5092IMG_5099
Since these were for the March of Dimes, I decided to add a little flare to them and do a purple and white swirl frosting on top of the cupcake.  Before you put the frosting into the piping bag, add stripes of gel food coloring to the inside of the bag using a pastry paintbrush.  Fill the bag with the frosting and then pipe it on the cupcakes.  Super cute, aren’t they?

Since they were for a bake sale (and I’m a sucker for a good presentation) I packaged each cupcake individually.  I used the Chinet punch cups and put each cupcake in one.  I then took a clear favor bag and placed the cupcake in it, and tied them off with a purple ribbon.
 IMG_5095  IMG_5097
I was not at work the day that the bake sale took place, but a number of coworkers have approached me since then and said that they were really good!

This is by no means a low calorie or “skinny” recipe, but they are great to take to cookouts or other gatherings.

If you try them let me know what you think!

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend!

Day 1 – Dumbo Challenge Training

So Tuesday was the official start to the Dumbo Challenge training per the Jeff Galloway training program.  I plan to use his program since it is specifically designed to get your body accustomed to running two races two days in a row.

I have been a horrible runner ever since my half marathons have been over, so I knew my first run was going to be a rough one.  I took my run/walk intervals down to 1:00/1:00 (from 1:30/1:00) and ran around my neighborhood for 30 minutes.  I did not stop to walk during my run intervals, which is a small victory.  My pace slowed down for the second mile (which it usually does…I haven’t started getting consistent negative splits), but I finished.  Everyone has to start somewhere, and even though I’ve really slacked, I’m confident that I can get my endurance back.

My second run is tonight – another 30 minute run.  Hopefully I can go a little further in this one.  The weather is supposed to be cloudy, so that should make for a decent run.  Here’s hoping!

Are you running the Dumbo Double Dare?  Are you using Galloway’s training or coming up with your own?

Until next time,

Jen
